AR Colleges Offer Entrepreneurship Training Technology and Innovation Aug 27, 2008
Eight Arkansas two-year colleges will offer degrees and certificates in entrepreneurship this fall. The degree is an Applied Associates Degree in Business Management or a stand-alone certificate in Entrepreneurship. The entrepreneurship curriculum is based on input from 20 institutions providing a national perspective. Courses include opportunity and feasibility analysis, funding acquisition for entrepreneurs, and business organization and management. The entrepreneurship track is in line with Gov. Mike Beebe's economic development agenda for the state, addressing key components of entrepreneurship and small business developm ent. Additional efforts to promote business ownership are also underway through a partnership between Arkansas State University and the Arkansas Delta Training and Education Consortium. Students can begin earning college credits while in high school through a new career pathway in entrepreneurship to be delivered in 12 counties across eastern Arkansas. Global Economic Climate at Lowest Level Since 2001 Globalization Aug 27, 2008
According to the U.S. Council for International Business, the International Chamber of Commerce's global economic climate index fell for the fourth consecutive quarter, reaching its lowest level since 2001. Is Homelessness on the Decline? Community & Quality of Life Aug 27, 2008
In a recent report, the Department of Housing and Urban Development finds that the U.S. homeless population decreased by nearly 90,000 persons from 2006 to 2007. HUD estimates a total homeless population of approximately 670,000 Americans in 2007. The report shows declining homeless populations in nine Southern states, and increases in four, including an 84 percent increase in the past year in West Virginia. Skeptics, though, are challenging the findings and methodology of the HUD report. Access the report here
Officials in southwest Virginia and parts of southern West Virginia have begun an experiment in workforce education in partnership with Comcast and Time Warner cable companies. Colleges and trai ning organizations will begin by creating training programs and financial aid opportunities that are to be followed up with direct training, employment listings, and WIA partnering agencies promoting programs and eligibility requirements for the services they offer.
